In India, the greatness of democracy is far overstretched! Sometimes makes me feel it operates under the premise, that if you allow people to create their own mess, they will complain less!

Balanced governance is important and the need for the same cannot be stressed more these days! If everyone is equal is the preempt for equal voting rights for citizens, then expecting the minority to be safe in a majority rule country will always be a flawed model.

I remember once in a movie a guy quipped ‘We are not a democracy, we are a bunch of scientists, who will make the most informed choice available to them!’ – if i remember right it was the Movie Sunshine

As we proceed in the life of a country, the need for giving Science the greater mandate and logic to be more prevalent is important in our Governing systems.

—

If you still reading this article, man i think you should either be my family or good friend. Cause here again, i am not a democracy expert and look at fate as it would have it! I am giving an opinion?!!!!

For those familiar with internet would also know what SEO stands for: Search Engine Optimization. Basically packaging your content most likely non-unique to sound like unique! Using all kinds of jargon technologies!
The trend as probably has always been and even more observed in the current elections that leaders tend to use words that are the buzz!

Anti-Corruption!, Environment! etc… etc… well probably that’s what wins elections! But i am not sure even our leaders have actual plans to tackle any of these problems or any clue how it actually works.

I was talking to a prospective legislator and realized that this man does not even know the difference between external security threat and internal security threat! and his manifesto had the Security and all Blah! Blah! in bold…

But with a society where we do not know the difference between and MP and MLA and think that MLA reports to MP what more can you expect from these leaders?!!!

Sometimes, as rightly said a society deserves the leaders it gets!

India is in the middle of a widespread ring of fire. That exactly is how you can explain the current Geo Political situation in our neighbourhood.

As though the Indian domestic situation was not good enough, we have a war south of us in Srilanka. A possible mutiny or coup in our Western neighbour Pakistan. Instability in our eastern neighbou Bangladesh and God alone knows a plethora of issue with our Northern neighbour China.

India’s foreign policy has always been rooted in the Indo – China Panchsheel signed in 1954. Though the policy ideates non-aggression and even lists that as a point, there have been instances where political will has gone overboard and has had the better of our policy guidelines.

History is evidence about the long-term domestic failure that is caused by an inconsistant foreign policy. There would always be a gamut of analysis and debate on the need to have a flexible vis-a-vis standard foreign policy.

But India sadly does not have the luxury of an Atlantic Ocean around it. Most of neighbours are just a fence away or maybe even without them in between. So the engaging policy that needs to govern our bilateral discussion need to be more encompassive of the spill-over threat.

—-

Working on this

Just Thinking out aloud!

Sometimes we just read too much between the lines but considering all that the media says about Hillary Clinton being close to the Indian NRI’s and all that !!! It was a letdown.

But should this also be looked from the point of view that probably India is not as strong we actually think we are??? Intrestingly Hillary’s visit to China was to make the country keep buying american debt in way to pull it out of the mess that US is into, but another perspective would be the actual difference between India and China in terms of military might!

Ind0 – China (The Tigers of Asia) is it then a over valued catch phrase? India is a safe & stable democracy at best for the western world! But china takes the thought to a whole new dimension.

So its official now! In-spite of the hue and cry even from EU & Canada, America has made it clear that ‘Buy American’ clause is going to stay in the USD 800 billion stimulus package. So inherently the Land of the free and equality is adopting the same principles that it vehemently apposes in any world trade stage! So what you can find is that as we go forward in the Obama years, America is surely going to find it difficult to convince countries to avoid trade protection policies!

American trade policies and the high moral grounds that they have claimed and stood for years are beginning to sound very Ostentatious! you may interpret it that way! but on the other hand, it may also be the state of affairs in the World’s largest economy. And considering the vested interest that most countries like India and China have (because of foreign deposits) it may be in our good that their economy recovers fast and fast enough!

America sometimes today reminds me of the biblical figure Samson who as history has it, took more people down with him than he destroyed during his lifetime!

Richard Karyea, the man the Liberian government has given the prestigious title ‘Civil Servant of the Year’ for 2008 for refusing a bribe that was 1300 times his monthly salary.

Indian Civil services also, no doubt has good officers like this man, but then over a period of time, what is the incentive for good performance. A promotion? A salary hike? A state has to move with times and probably look at awarding these officers, who would have a greater incentive in doing their duty.

What seems to be happening is the lack of interest and alienation that a honest office faces at the hand of the state that moves into abyss, the last of the good men around!

Let us not forget that most of the attacks on our state could have been averted if somebody somewhere played his role in the services very well!

Probably more generous accolades would re-kindle the desire to serve honestly and find a new purpose in many for doing their job good!
