Amnesty International is closing down operations in India on the 31st of March 2009. An organization which is one step above the law of land and is governed by the fundamental principle of humanity is leaving India. The reason they have cited is the repeated rejection of the Indian government to give them FCRA clearance.

I am surprised the media has not picked it up, a country that calls itself a democracy and preserves the right to speech as a fundamental right is failing to retain an organization that is the epitome of Human rights from leaving the country!

Human rights violations are more often than not committed by the state, and hence the absence of a lobbying body gives a no check status to the prevailing law enforcement bodies! So is that what the state wants? In the election year, some excesses often go unnoticed!

Is anybody listening!

A call to their office is going through to the answering machine at all the extensions

Here is the excerpt of the mail I received from the country head Mt Mukul recently:

We are extremely sorry to inform you that the AII Office is closing down shortly and the activities, events, campaigns initiated by the India office will remain suspended till further notice. All the colleagues, working in the AII office will be relieved by March 31, 2009. This is because Government of India continues to deny the FCRA registration to AI India Foundation and our local resources are very insufficient for our survival.

I have read many a books about China offlate most of which has inspite of the human rights violation has shown the country in positive light considering the Economic muscle and the dynamic communist country! The most notable of them being ‘What does China think?’ But i read went through this website today http://chinaview.wordpress.com/ which made me feel that of what value is any country that does not treat its own people well ?!

The state that is meant to uphold the values of the people is the same that destroys it!

I am not sure if any of you would have noticed this in the recent Beijing Olympics, the gradiouse opening ceremony saw mass events performed with laser precision and coordination! But somehow it fails to impress at a personal level considering the fact you can notice that the people are forced to put on an artificial smile on their faces! Something that would associate to an opressive regime. I am noone to suggest or comment on a country. Its not my business!

But look here my country! That gives us the freedom to speak our mind! A democracy in the trust sense and the embodiment of unity in diversity!

Why is America so intrested in Human Rights violation around India, when its own record back home is at abyss! And why is america so concerned about Burma not co-operating when back home they have had similar instances in the New Orleans flooding?!

Why all of a sudden america is concerned about China / Burma / Tibet / Srilanka / Afganisthan / Pakistan all in one go? Why is this not sending our External security affairs team into a war footing effort? Russia which has by far the most sophisticated defence mechanism itself has been skeptic of the missile shield that America is talkign about in Europe! Is not something similar happening now in the Asian sub continent, and nothing is being done to counter this iminent threat that we have from America!
