Looks like this is a local issue. Go to google.com if you are signed up into their network already on the top right your name should be there. Sign out first.

Then clear the cache and the problem should be sorted.

Alternatively, empty browser cache. Close the browser and open again and sign in, it should work! Let me know if it worked!

Unlike Google designs which are generally synonymous with functionality and lightness over design aesthetics (evident from orkut design) the new favicon is more a symmetry seeking one! Not something google’ish  you can say!
