30% import duty on High End Televisions – Not what Henry Would Agree On!

I think it was Henry Ford who said “The man who will use his skill and constructive imagination to see how much he can give for a dollar, instead of how little he can give for a dollar, is bound to succeed. “

Was reading the recent move by the Govt. to add duty to Televisions imports! I guess the only way to raise money these days is to “Increase Taxes”! – How much Tax can be charged on the Dollar!

Instead, should they not be encouraging companies that manufacture these screens to set up shops in India so that they don’t get cheaper overseas? In the short run it may bring the dollar rates down! but it is merely a step backwards in the globalization of the economy. Instead we should focus on creating an environment for research and development, so that the best come and stay back. This is historically worked for US and Europe. Should we not be taking cues from them then?
