Thoughts for promotion of Public Transport Systems
Most of us grew up at a time when, Public Transport systems were the only available form or at-least the most prevalent mode of commute available and we had to take to it not necessarily as a matter of choice.
The notorious overcrowding and discomfort that one had to endure to reach work was probably something we had to put up with. But as we took the elevator of India’s growth story, the first things to change in our lifestyle as affordability increased was probably the things that annoyed us the most and of-course, the mode of transport was the first to take the hit. Buses became cars and bikes as choices!
At this point, seeing the west as an example there is an attempt, to lure this departed road users back into the fold of public transport. Which may, may not see its light! for the simple reason of bad taste that was left in the minds of many (As perceived)
On the other hand, in a country like India which has a burgeoning middle class, the number of users contributing to the PCU rise on roads is also rapidly increasing. With efforts and innovative ideas, the transport authority can find a new generation of takers. This is most necessary as the repercussions of private transport have started having an adverse effect on the National fuel bill.
The ideology that many in the industry would echo would be to follow the example of Singapore, where car ownership is costlier, and thereby forcing riders to take to public transport system. Here is why I think this is probably an incorrect approach for India. India is a developing country and ownership of assets, in the mind of middle class is the essence of growth! And with a rapidly growing middle class, curtailing of individual ownership may not be desirable.
Here are some thoughts:
- Whenever, a new vehicle is sold, an annual transport pass be made available to the driver, so that he has the free choice of taking to public transport.
- This can be worked backward to the Licensing authority, where a couple of points can be knocked of the waiting period if the person takes a pass for using the public transport system.
- Car tax could be made cheaper for people, who purchase Annual bus passes for the entire family.
- Transport pass takers be given discounted entries into Govt. Museums and events.
The above points are easier said than done, but would sure give a direction of thought!
