I was turn off to realize that .avi files can’t be played in itunes and hence also ipod and so the only way seems to be to convert them to mp4 and then sync!

turns out .avi the shortform form for audi video interleave format was introduced by Microsoft! No wonder apple won’t take it! but i thought after the $300 million dollar emergency rescue deal of microsoft with apple they sorted such cross platform support issues! well looks like no!
