Does India have an advantage if Democrats win?
I have been wondering if India indeed has an advantage if Democrats win? Well lets see the Indian stand both the GOP take with reference on India.
The Republicans as has always been has had a very large view on its foreign policy meaning their initiatives have been more focussed on a more outside – in approach rather than an inside – out approach. Leaving them on a respond mode in case of domestic catastrophies rather than a prepared state. The republican pitch has been combat with the enemy and has been more around perceived threat! Which is rather a convoluted issue out of the scope of the issue discussed.
The Republicans are more centered around threat and security issues rather than actual daily issues that affect the life of americans and consequently the world.
But wait a minute! My view of the republicans is bad cause of my positive view towards the democrats! So that is biased.
So lets look at the Democrats camp. What have we got here. Its more personality driven this time around than party ideology driven. So we have the clintons and the obama. Obama atleast is talking about negotiating rather than confronting with International sour partners! Thats a huge shift in the US foreign policy in the recent times. Obama is talking more about issues that affect lives of average americans. He is making the long term perspective sound wonderful for the americans.
On the medium term ofcourse there would be a beating that the american economy would take as a consequence of undoing the repurcussions by the preceding terms of the government. But American would surely emerge as a Grand Father of values if Obama can be given a chance.
Now how does India get affected? On the short term yes a democratic washington will have a fallout in India. Cause of the expectations that the administration will have as a consequence of the Nuclear deal. India will be expected to play a second fiddle in America’s foreign policy. Also Obama is still talking about retaining union jobs and protecting the average american worker and not the corporations. That translates to let outsourcing business for India from a short term view. But on the longer run currency stability will see more stable global indian companies emerge.
But again getting back to the security issue. India already finds itself sandwiched between Kashmir a Pro American Country and Srilanka where America has pledged its armed forces and china which is bigger than the Himalayas for all practical purposes! So that makes india’s anti american stand rather precariously poised. With the defense budgets swaying the Amercan way more than the Russian way in recent years. Its rather a two edged sword which is sharp at both ends!
Either ways India’s wider stance with countries like Russia and Iran is what that will affect the overall stability outlook of the country. Not that alliance with Venezuela or Cuba is what is needed, but a pro NAM policy is necessary in the long term keeping the long term intrest of India.
